About the course

Aim

The purpose of this award is to enable the learner to acquire the knowledge, skills, and competence to work in a supportive role in the area of rehabilitation, physical disability or dysfunction in a domestic or institutional setting.   The role of a PTA includes active participation in delivery of treatment with the physiotherapy team and/or the exercise therapy teams. A PTA assists the physiotherapist in the implementation of treatment interventions, carrying out one to one and group interventions. You will use your knowledge and training to apply different physiotherapeutic modalities as appropriate such as ice, heat, wax, TENS as directed by the team.

The course also covers Healthcare modules providing the skills necessary to progress to potential employment as a Physiotherapy Assistant or a Healthcare Assistant.

Entry Requirements

Suitability for this course will be assessed at interview.  Work experience in the area would be an advantage.

Work Experience

Supervised clinical experience in nursing homes, hospitals, and other health facilities is incorporated into this course.  This will take the form of one day per week for the academic year.

Career Opportunities

A Physiotherapy Assistant may gain employment assisting a physiotherapist in settings such as nursing homes, hospitals, and other health facilities or work as a Healthcare Assistant in similar settings.
